Beyond the Hearts and Chocolates
Originally, Valentine's Day was celebrated to honor Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr. The word "Valentine" itself was named after Saint Valentine, a Roman clergyman who was martyred for secretly marrying couples to spare their husbands from war. This act of defiance and love became the foundation of the holiday, a tradition built on defying societal norms to prioritize love and commitment. But the commercialized version of Valentine's Day? That's a different story.
I spent the day hiding to any apps, dodging some posts about Valentine's. I pretended it was just another day, but it wasn't. Everyone else seemed to be celebrating love, and I felt like I was watching a movie I wasn't interested to.
But then, something opened my mind. My sadness wasn't about romantic love; it was about feeling disconnected. I'd forgotten to appreciate all the love already in my life.
That's when I realized, love isn't just grand gestures. It's the little things – a chat with a friend or a simple "I love you" to my family. Those are what really matter.
This Valentine's Day taught me a lot. Love isn't just romantic relationships; it's family, friends, even strangers! The pressure to have a perfect Valentine's Day is toxic. And self-love? Seriously important. I learned to appreciate myself, my strengths, my capacity for love.
So, yeah, I'm still not quite a fan of Valentine's Day, but I see it differently now. It's a chance to reflect, appreciate the love in my life, and nurture those connections. Love isn't about grand gestures; it's the small, everyday acts of kindness. And that's worth celebrating every day.
